Speaking in Abuja while officially receiving the report of the Nigeria Youth Employment Action Plan, the minister said "Consultation is going on at the highest level of government on generation of jobs for the unemployed", adding that "the immediate goal is to create at least one million jobs this year."

According to him, "From the Federal Executive Council to the Economic Management Team, the focus is on employment generation from 2009 to 2011 to match the thousands of inflows into the labor market on annual basis.

"Just few days ago, the honorable ministers of planning, labour and myself brainstormed on the unemployment situation with the country representative of the World Bank with a resolution to coordinate and accelerate efforts at addressing the job question", the minister noted.

Describing the youth employment action plan as a holistic document for tackling youth joblessness, the minister noted further that apart from the meeting with the World Bank, related sessions involving relevant key line ministers were also recently held with a focus to create at least one million jobs this year alone.

Senator Olasunkanmi said the youth employment action plan was commissioned by his ministry as part of the administration's determination to create enabling environment for job creation with the active participation of relevant stakeholders, adding that 'it will serve as a mainstreaming tool for youth empowerment and employment.

"The action plan would be studied by relevant ministries and agencies and it will in due course be presented to the Federal Executive Council for further deliberations and approval. The action plan has the potency to empower Nigerian youth as the driving force behind Mr. President's Seven Point Agenda", the minister stated.
